How do I make good coffee?

I’ve tried several different coffee makers, Mellita, Proctor Silex, Hamilton Beach and some brands I can’t remember. I’ve bought all kinds of beans and pre ground coffee, tried tap and bottled water. I had a college room mate who made dynamite coffee and he cooked the beans first making a lot of smoke. I’d really like to know how he did that because he spoiled me. Everything else tastes like crap even (especially) Starbucks.

Your room mate must have been roasting. He obviously got the beans unroasted – green. That’s the key because coffee gets stale a lot more quickly than most people realize. There are several web stores where you can buy green beans. Burmancoffee.com. Sweetmarias.com and quite a few others. Google “green coffee’ . You can purchase a roaster which will coast quite a few bucks or just get a hot air corn popper. I use a Presto Poplite. I cut a small screen out of hardware cloth to keep the beans from blowing out. You have to stand there and shake it but it will give you an excellent roast. It does make a lot of smoke so roast outside. As far as the coffee maker goes, most of them are pretty cheaply made and the water hits the grounds at too low a temperature. It should be around 195 – 200 F. You can check with a cooking thermometer. Mr Coffee seems to work well. I like to use a French press sometimes and just dump boiling water into it. Boiling water brings out the tannic acid but sometimes I like that. Lastly the grinder makes a difference. Most of the grinders in the stores are the impeller type. A burr grinder is preferred as it gives a uniform grind – particles the same size. If you looked at the grounds from an impeller grinder under a microscope it would look like boulders and dust with all other sizes in between. Burr grinders are expensive though. I have a big old one from a grocery store (A&P) that I managed to scrounge. It was free. This is probably way more than you wanted to know but heck, you asked.

I’m looking to buy one of the single cup coffee machines and am thinking about the Tasimo coffee maker.

I’ve had a Tassimo Coffee Machine for about three months and I absolutely love it!! It’s such a pleasure coming down the stairs in a morning with a gorgeous cup of coffee to look forward to.

I find the Tassimo easy to use and importantly, easy to clean too. It’s also very easy to but the Tassimo tdiscs that are what the coffee comes in.

When I bought my machine I was considering the Tassimo along with a couple of other machines. I eventually decided after seeing the reviews at: http://www.premiergold.info/recommends/coffee-makers.html which convinced me of my choice. It is a standard Mr. Coffee. I mean, not only the glass jar, but the manufacturer of the complex.

vinegar works well, but sucks! mr. packages of coffee sells cleaner small section appliances Target, Walmart, etc put the cleaner into the pot, fill with water, put it in the resevior, and run through your machine as if making a pot of coffee. it says on the package, but I think you have to run clear water through two or three times afterwards.
