As far as the coffee maker goes, most of them are pretty cheaply made and the water hits the grounds at too low a temperature. It should be around 195 – 200 F. You can check with a cooking thermometer. Mr Coffee seems to work well. I like to use a French press sometimes and just dump boiling water into it. Boiling water brings out the tannic acid but sometimes I like that. Lastly the grinder makes a difference. Most of the grinders in the stores are the impeller type. A burr grinder is preferred as it gives a uniform grind – particles the same size. If you looked at the grounds from an impeller grinder under a microscope it would look like boulders and dust with all other sizes in between. Burr grinders are expensive though. I have a big old one from a grocery store (A&P) that I managed to scrounge. It was free. This is probably way more than you wanted to know but heck, you asked.
