Power bill 8X normal 10 days into cycle?

Had a bill last month that was twice my normal power bill. Only changes were the addition of a flat screen tv, fan and coffee maker. Tested all of those units with a Wattsup pro wattage analyzer and they came back negative.

Normally we use around 900 KWh hours a month, last month we were up to 2000 Kwh and this month, 11 days in we are staring at over 8000 Kwh…..

How is this possible? Wouldn’t any appliance that we can’t test using the 120V wattsup unit such as the Clothes dryer cut off at the breaker if it was using that much energy???

I walked around the house and don’t see any cables running to the neighbors house so I don’t think they are nicking my power.

That 8000 kWh in 11 days is, by my calculation, something like a 125A constant draw across both legs of your service, a truly astounding amount of power. What is your main breaker size, if it is 100A, a constant load like that would hardly even be possible, it would pop the breaker (if not right away, after some time).

The only kind of things that would draw such power might be electric heating devices, like an electric furnace, tankless hot water heater, etc., and if you were heating something that much I’d think you would notice it, you’d be getting pretty hot or your house would be on fire.

Does your meter have the spinning disk thingy? It should be reaching supersonic velocities at that rate. Kick your main breaker, see if it stops (it damn well should!).

So yeah, your meter could be bad but that’s a somewhat odd way for them to fail. Whether it is your meter or some other really odd thing, I’d think you could get the attention and help of your power company. After all, you’ve been giving them lots of money!

PS. You don’t have any kids who might have cobbled together a Large Hadron Collider in the basement as a science project, do you?

Save $ $ The bill to declare "Phantom Power Supplies Colorado Some have already noticed an increase in your last bill Xcel Energy. The new company's billing system has two levels of kicks, but there are ways to save.
